DEEP WATER COOLING
HIGHLY EFFICIENT, LOW COST, RENEWABLE COOLING
Deep water cooling uses naturally cold water in heat exchangers for cooling during the summer months instead of air conditioning units.
naturally cold water transferred to cool air
Deep Water Cooling technology uses naturally cold water that is piped in, transferred to heat exchangers to cool air and circulated through the connected buildings, thereby eliminating the need for conventional air conditioning systems.
Water, like most substances, becomes denser as it cools, but reaches its maximum density at 3.9°C. Hence, during the winter, colder water, being denser, sinks below the warmer surface waters in water bodies such as lakes and oceans. This results in the creation of a layer of perpetually cold water below a certain depth.
Benefits of DEEP WATER COOLING
Reduces FOssil Fuel Use
By displacing conventional air conditioning systems, deep water cooling can reduce the need for fossil fuels.
COSTS LESS THAN CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS
The running costs for deep water cooling are lower than conventional air conditioning systems.
Very Energy Efficient
Deep water cooling is very energy efficient requires only about 1/10th of the average energy required by conventional cooling systems.
A RENEWABLE Resource
Geothermal heat exchange takes advantage of a naturally occurring and renewable resource that is accessible all year round, such as lakes.
CONSIDErATIONS of DEEP WATER COOLING
LOCAL WATER SOURCE
In order to leverage a deep water cooling system, you need a large water source close to the project site.
PRECISE WATER TEMPERATURE
The optimum water temperature (3 to 6°C) for a deep water cooling project would be at a depth of around 50m which needs to be taken into consideration during the construction of the infrastructure.
LABOUR INTENSIVE DEVELOPMENT
The construction stage is labour-intensive and requires large quantities of source materials.
